Pro surfer fights off attacking shark

Mick Fanning, one of the world's top surfers, has been attacked by a shark during a televised
competition in South Africa.

The Australian emerged unharmed after punching the shark and swimming away from it, he said.

Video of the attack showed the shark's fin rising out of the water behind Fanning as he paddled on his board before taking his turn in the J-Bay Open event in Eastern Cape.

"I was just cruising, just waiting for my turn, my opportunity," said the 34-year-old, a triple world champion who was competing in the finals against fellow Australian Julian Wilson.

"I felt like I was just about to start moving, start paddling, get going again when all of a sudden I had this instinct there was someone behind me and all of a sudden I started getting pulled underwater.

"And then the thing came up.

"I was on my board and it was like right there and I saw the whole thing like thrashing around.

"I was getting dragged under by leg rope and then I felt like it kicked me off, but it was still there attached to my board.

"It felt like I punched it a couple of times and I felt like it was dragging me underwater and then my leg rope broke and I was like, 'Alright, just start swimming and swimming and swimming.'"

He recalled: "Swimming and screaming and shouting to Jules (Julian Wilson) to move."

Fanning was picked up by a jet ski after the attack and taken to shore.

Photo of candle-lit 'ghost' terrifies museum staff

It was taken during a ghost hunting evening at Torquay Museum in Devon and staff claim nobody else was in the room when it was shot.

The image was captured in the museum's Old Devon Farmhouse Gallery - a mock-up of a cottage filled with 300-year-old artifacts and furniture.

Staff were randomly taking photos and only spotted the figure when looking back at the images later.

Marketing manager Carl Smith said: "We saw something in the middle of the photo and when we adjusted the contrast we clearly saw the woman.

"It was a bit of a surprise and pretty creepy.

"From the angle of the photograph it looks like she is submerged into the floor, almost like she is below floor level.

"There was no-one else present when the photo was taken so we are at a loss to explain it.

"It is a bit of a mystery, and there seems to be no other explanation."

Animated Fly Over of Pluto

This simulated flyover of Pluto’s Norgay Montes (Norgay Mountains) and Sputnik Planum (Sputnik Plain) was created from New Horizons closest-approach images.

Norgay Montes have been informally named for Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two humans to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Sputnik Planum is informally named for Earth’s first artificial satellite.

The images were acquired by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on July 14 from a distance of 48,000 miles (77,000 kilometers). Features as small as a half-mile (1 kilometer) across are visible.

Fallout Shelter to Release on Android Sometime in August

The Android version of popular Fallout mobile game Fallout Shelter should launch sometime in August.

That's according to Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines, who shared the release window on Twitter in an exchange with a fan.

"Coming along nice," Hines said about the Android edition. "Haven't announced a date, but should be out next month. We'll let you know when we have specifics."

Fallout Shelter was announced during Bethesda's E3 briefing last month and was released later that evening. The free game immediately raced to the top of the charts, generating lots of revenue through microtransactions even though Bethesda claims the game is not necessarily about making money.

Just this week, Fallout Shelter added its first Fallout 4 character, Commonwealth Minutemen leader Preston Garvey, along with his Laser Musket.

Man Gropes Mannequin In Public

A man was caught on camera as he inappropriately touched a mannequin in the middle of a busy street - in broad daylight.

The astonishing clip shows the man check over his shoulder several times before grabbing hold of the plastic model's breasts.

He then leans in and kisses her on the chest, before moving his hands down to her bottom.

The man gropes the lingerie-clad mannequin's posterior for several seconds as several cars pass by his indiscreet location.

In full view of the street, he makes one final obscene gesture before he quickly turns on his heel and walks away from the model.

A van blares its horn, apparently in the man's direction as it drives past.

The video's description suggests that the man is an Arab but does not state where the footage was filmed.

The bizarre clip was shared across viral video site LiveLeak.com on July 3 and has already clocked up more than 105,000 views.

"Blood Rain" to Fall Over Britain

Rare 'blood rain' is set to fall on Britain, staining windows and cars.

The sinister sounding-soaking occurs when sand from the Saharan Desert mixes with precipitation, giving it a reddish-tint.

When dry, it leaves a thin layer of red dust which can coat houses, cars and garden furniture- hence its ominous name.

All parts of Britain could be at risk from the rouge rain.

MeteoGroup forecaster Billy Payne said: “The air plume still contains dust from the Sahara.

"Rain on Friday night and Saturday morning means Saturday is the most likely time to find cars covered with reddish or orange dust, meaning the rain is known as ‘blood rain.’

“This dust could be found anywhere in the UK - including Scotland.”

Forecaster Brian Gaze of The Weather Outlook said: “’Blood rain’ due to dust from the Sahara Desert means orange dust is expected to be seen quite clearly on house windows, garden furniture and cars.”

KFC is launching a comic book featuring Colonel Sanders next week

KFC shot down rumours Colonel Sanders was cooking up mutant chickens with eight legs and six wings… but maybe fictional ones will appear in the new comic book he’s writing.

Judging from the teaser image it will feature a standard Western plotline, but we think some robotic alien cockerels could really shake things up.

Fast food fans can get a copy of ‘KFC Presents: The Colonel’s Adventure Comics’ at next weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The Colonel tempted fans on Twitter telling them: ‘If you love comics and fried chicken and subliminal marketing, then you’ll love this exclusive comic about me!’

His website promises people can ‘learn the true story of how Colonel Sanders shot a man, delivered babies, and made the world’s best chicken’, so maybe his new graphic novel will grapple with these gripping themes.
