Incredible map shows every internet-connected device in the world

The internet is often considered to be a universal resource, but just how ‘world-wide’ is it?

This map from Shodan founder John Matherly shows every device connected to the internet around the globe.

John created the map by sending a ping request to every IP address on the internet.

Eastern USA and Europe glow a deep red due to their high levels of internet connectivity, however the map also gives us an insight into internet usage in the developing world.

The east coast of South America and India both have a high number of internet-connected devices, as do Thailand and Indonesia.

There is even a little dot right in the middle of Greenland – a research station perhaps?

Interestingly it actually took John more time to make the actual map than collect the data.

‘It took less than five hours to gather the data, and another 12 hours or so to generate the map image,’ he told Gizmodo.

Hudl 2 Remote Play Stress Test Android

Below you can find a video that demonstrates how well the Unofficial Remote Play App for Android works on the Hudl 2.

It's a pretty flawless experience in my opinion.

Animated Fly Over of Pluto

This simulated flyover of Pluto’s Norgay Montes (Norgay Mountains) and Sputnik Planum (Sputnik Plain) was created from New Horizons closest-approach images.

Norgay Montes have been informally named for Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two humans to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Sputnik Planum is informally named for Earth’s first artificial satellite.

The images were acquired by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on July 14 from a distance of 48,000 miles (77,000 kilometers). Features as small as a half-mile (1 kilometer) across are visible.

Samsung accused of disabling Microsoft security updates

Samsung has been accused of disabling Microsoft's software in preference for its own, leaving computers insecure.

Microsoft technical expert Patrick Barker said he had found Samsung software downloading and running a file called Disable_Windowsupdate.exe, while helping a user with a computer problem.

He said "a few Samsung-manufactured computer systems" were affected.

Samsung said it was just giving customers the choice about running Windows software.

"It is not true that we are blocking a Windows 8.1 operating system update on our computers," Samsung said in a statement.

"As part of our commitment to consumer satisfaction, we are providing our users with the option to choose if and when they want to update the Windows software on their products."

According to Samsung, the SW update allows users "to download the newest drives, updates and software for your Windows PC".

Officially the PSVITA is dead

Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed at E3 that no more AAA titles will be released on PSVITA.

He did stress though that they will still support Indie titles and that Remote Play will be highly regarded in it's future.

Given that you can play remote play on any 4.0+ Android Device the need for a Vita for Remote Play is even less.

My problem with this is while some Indie games are amazing, it isn't the reason I bought a Vita, I bought it for games like Uncharted and Killzone, and I was surprised by how awesome Gravity Rush was.

I also enjoyed the Assassins Creed outing provided by Ubisoft, but this now seems to be a thing of the past.

This, Playstation Move / Eye Toy, 3D gaming on Playstation and more recently the PS4 Camera are the reason I wont be getting Morpheus for at least a couple of years after release (if at all).

It will turn out to be nothing more than a gimmick that Sony will simply stop supporting shortly after its over hyped release as all of the above have met this demise.

PS4 remote play on Tesco Hudl 2

Here I demo how well Remote Play works on the Hudl 2. This will work on most 4.0+ Android devices.

Samsung Releases 16 New Themes on the Theme Store

The launch of the S6 and S6 Edge back in March saw the latest version of Touchwiz being released alongside the devices, with some serious effort put into it this time around, in a bid to move away from the notorious reputation Samsung’s Android skin has gained over the past few years. Memory efficiency and decreased bloatware were the obvious fixes, but Samsung went above and beyond, adding features that end users actually needed. One of them is the homebrewed Theme Store that allows users to style their device using a multitude of themes from the store.

Despite the store containing a handful of themes in its infancy, the collection has been growing ever since, with Samsung releasing a bunch of new themes every so often and even bringing third-party designers on board. Today saw sixteen new themes hit the Theme Store, increasing the multitude of styles available.

Millions let down by broadband speed ads, says Which?

Up to three-quarters of UK households are still not getting the top broadband speeds promised by advertisements, according to consumer watchdog Which?

Up to 15.4 million households were paying for packages with advertised maximum speeds they would not achieve, a report suggests.

Ofcom has begun a broadband crackdown, making it easier for people to swap providers if they are unhappy with the speed of their service.

But Which? said more needed to be done.

Its tests also suggested that only 17% of homes were achieving the average advertised speed, with even fewer during peak evening times.

The problem was particularly bad in rural areas where 98% of homes were unable to get the advertised headline speed of the broadband service they had chosen.

"We want Ofcom to ensure consumers get the speeds promised by providers," said Which? executive director Richard Lloyd.

Finally the PS4 has a media player!

When you next turn on your PS4 you will be treated to the option to download a new media player! At long last!

This has been a majorly requested feature and Sony have been listening.

Taken from the Playstation blog:

A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download.

The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4.

Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

Oculus and Xbox create virtual reality tie-up

Oculus VR has shown off the version of its virtual reality headset that will be sold to consumers, and revealed it will come with an Xbox One controller.

The Facebook-owned company also revealed it is working on its own handheld controller system called Oculus Touch.

The Rift headset will be released early next year. Until now, only a "developer" version had been sold.

It will compete with rival VR headsets such as Sony's Morpheus and HTC's Vive.

Google has made a more basic entry into the market with its Cardboard product, which uses a person's smartphone to create a VR effect.

The deal with Microsoft means Oculus owners will be able to stream Xbox One games to the headset and see them as if they are being viewed on a huge "home cinema" screen.

Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer made a surprise appearance at the event to introduce the partnership.

Xbox One console to run old 360 games

Old Xbox 360 games will be playable on the newer Xbox One console, Microsoft has announced at the E3 games show.

It has developed technology that lets the older games run on the new console "natively".
E3

Microsoft said Xbox One owners will not have to pay again to play the games that they already owned.

100 titles will be available to play when the feature launches at Christmas but "hundreds" more will be available soon after.

The titles will show up automatically in a player's games library when they became available, it said.
Mod making

The press conference also saw Bethesda Studios give some details about the version of Fallout 4 it is creating for the Microsoft's console.

Player-made add-ons, or mods, for the PC version of the game will be able to run on the Xbox One as well, said Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda.

Also announced was a version of Minecraft that has been revamped to run on Microsoft's augmented reality headset HoloLens. The new version turns the flat world into an interactive environment that can be explored in depth. Owners of the original game will be able to join in multiplayer Minecraft sessions seen via the HoloLens.

Remote Play on any 4.0+ Android Device

twisted89 is still doing some sterling work on making PS4 Remote Play available to everyone
running Android 4.0 and up.

Another update has dropped on 12/06/2015 which fixes a few bugs.

There is also a 1.4 beta test for native pad support. I have been running Remote Play on my Hudl 2 now for some time and I play Disney Infinity with my daughter when we can't have access to the TV.
It runs flawlessly for the most part and i have no complaints as it allows me to play on a larger 8" screen instead of being forced to use my Vita.

I'm looking forward to see what comes next.

If you wish to see this in action check out the video below.

If you wish to download this mod or read more info on it, check it out here.

Sony Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0 Gold and remote play

Here's a quick video I made about using the wireless headset while playing PS4 via remote play.

It should also be noted that this was filmed on the moto g and is an example of how good (or not as the case may be) the camera is.

Although advertised on the box that virtual surround doesn't work it does work if what ever you plug it into supports it.

For example I have VSS on my Moto G via the app described in the video above and it works great.

PSVITA Remote Play Problems

So, I've been searching the net for weeks now trying to find out what is causing the problem I have with remote play but for the most part never really see what other peoples problems are.

For example people just mention lag and connection problems but never go into detail and so I have made the below video to show the issue I have.

As you can see there is a connection error that occurs making it impossible to get into gaming on it because at crucial parts it will crap out and you have to put it down and let it settle before carrying on.

I have tried everything I have read up on. PS4 is connected by ethernet, necessary ports are open, DMZ is active on PS4, all wifi connections have been of when testing, this happens on both direct connection and through router, power save setting is off on VITA and yes I know this needs to be unchecked due to the engrish that is used,  i have uses wifi analyser on my phone to pick the est channel on my vita and the ps4, router and vita are all on different channels with strong signal.

As the video shows I am sat about 1.5 meters from my PS4 and this issue exists so distance isn't the problem either.

I have tried EVERYTHING!!! Does anybody know of any good solutions to this?

I am going to try and borrow another vita to see if the issue is vita hardware related but I hope not!!

Root your X10 and run android like it's supposed to be!

Been asked a few times to stick the root guide for Xperia X10 on here, so here it is.

Again, like my LG Root Guide I take NO CREDIT for this. This is all done by a highly skilled android community and all thank can go to them HERE.

I have simply copied and pasted this guide from XDA.

Please follow this guide carefully and if you require help, join XDA and ask there.

If you do this successfully it would make sense to check out CM7.
The rooting part is for Stock SE 2.3.3 FW...
The installing recovery part is for all ROMs based on SE 2.3.3 FW... if the Dev of ur ROM has not yet included the latest xRecovery posted by Z ONLY then install the recovery! else wait for the ROM dev to include it in that ROM..

i am posting this because many ppl are getting confused over the slightly "complicated" process...

i have personally verified all the below steps atleast 4 times! and it works properly! please follow the below instructions step by step...

[ Credits ]
  1. Bin4ry & Androxyde for their work on Flashtool
  2. aZuZu for finding this rooting solution! aZuZu u are super awesome!!!
  3. zdzihu for fixed xRecovery-0.3 for GB! thanks Z u are a life saver
  4. me, for making it friendly

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO THANK THE ABOVE PPL FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!

[ Requirement ]
  1. Stock SE 2.3.3 firmware/custom 2.3.3 ROM (if u want to update/install xRecovery the simple way)
  2. my modified Flashtool package posted below

[ Whats Included? ]
  1. modified Flashtool 0.2.9.1 package
  2. aZuZu's FTF files posted for rooting
  3. zdzihu's xRecovery-0.3-GBready (with all fixes made by Z)

[ Downloads ]

FlashTool_0.2.9.1-GBready_root_xRec [ Mirrors ]
  1. Just download and double click on the downloaded file
  2. it will ask where u want to install/extract, browse to that folder then click on "Extract"
  3. once its extracted go into that folder and u can now launch Flashtool using X10FlashTool.exe

[ How To: Root ] (all credits for finding this method go to aZuZu)

looking at the files posted by aZuZu i can tell u that this will work on ALL BRANDED/GENERIC/REGIONAL 2.3.3 GB FWs... provided that the kernel.sin file remains same (which it will for all 3.0.1.G.0.75 FW)

What is meant by magnitude?

So, What is meant by "magnitude" when observing space objects?
Being an amateur astronomer myself and not long into the subject I found myself asking this question. 'Magnitude' is a scale used to dictate the brightness of any given space object, this is easier said than done due to the way the human eye responds to light. It takes a difference in light levels of around 2.5 times before we can determine that an object is "twice as bright".

Stars are measured using this logorithmic relationship. A brighter object ha s a lower magnitude than a feinter one and the brightest objects in space have a magnitude which can be below zero. A magnitude difference of 5  is equivalent to a 'true' difference of 100, so an object with a magnitude of '0' will be 100 times brighter than an object with a magnitude of '5'. The feintest objects viewable by the naked eye are around 6.0 while our own Sun has a magnitude of -26.7.

The magnitude of an object is usually indicated by the brightness of the light reaching earth, which of course can be reduced by dust clouds and particles and also the distance from the Earth so this magnitude is called 'apparent magnitude'. This can be compared to 'absolute magnitude' which is measured from a standard distance from the object of 32.6 light years.
Although brightness of a star is one important characteristic it's colour is also important as this can indicate its surface temperature, in the same way heated metal glows dependant on it's temperature (red hot, yellow hot, white hot and blue hot). Knowing the colour and energy output of a star can be paramount to discovering it's size, as a luminous but cool star will have a larger surface area as the energy will be spread out.

HTC launch two Android mobile phones

Mobile phone maker HTC has launched two Android mobile phones designed to secure its place as one of Apple's top competitors.

The Taiwanese firm hopes to challenge the iPhone 4 with the large-screen Desire HD and the Desire Z with its fold-out keyboard.

Both HTC phones are based on Google's Android operating system.

They come a day after Finnish rival Nokia presented three phones to revive its flagging smartphone division.

Mobile phone makers and network operators are betting heavily that consumers are keen on a connected and multimedia experience on the move.

Smartphone sales soar
Speaking at the HTC launch, Patrick Chomet, global director of terminals at network operator Vodafone, said smartphone sales were soaring, already taking more than 30% of the market; in two years Vodafone expects that smartphones will make up 70% ot total mobile phone sales.

With most smartphones now easy to use, customers are making heavy use of new services. During the past year, Mr Chomet said, Vodafone had experienced a doubling of data traffic for both location services like maps, and access to social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

Motorola punts mega huge Droid phone

Motorola has released its latest Android offering, the Droid Xy, and it's one chunky, funky monkey. Which is a good thing.

By chunky, we mean not only its size — big — but also all the tasty bits it contains: a snappy 1GHz TI OMAP3630 processor, hefty 1540 mAh battery, versatile 8-megapixel auto-focus camera with dual-LED flash, welcome HDMI port, convenient 8GB of built-in memory coupled with an SD card slot that take up to 32GB more, and enormous 4.3-inch display. More on "enormous" in a moment.

By funky, we mean that its camera set-up gives the Droid X a lumpy-forehead look. While the main body of the handset is more than acceptably thin, the bulky camera and flash unit require a heftier amount of space.

But if the quality of a smartphone's camera is important to you, you may forgive this lumpy shooter's bulgy housing. The camera captures not only 8-megapixel stills with touch-to-focus capability and "shutter" speeds of up to 1/1000th of a second, but also 720p HD video with noise cancellation and special effects such as slo-mo.
