University to offer Zombie Apocalypse course

The zombie apocalypse is coming, that’s a fact. And if you want to be prepared you should probably enroll in Michigan State University’s new course, “Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse: Catastrophes & Human Behavior.”

The course, according to Time Magazine, focuses on how humans behave when faced with plagues or other catastrophic events. The course will cover the hypothetical questions concerning a zombie uprising, but will also look at how to deal with earthquakes, plagues, falling meteors and other doomsday scenarios.

According to the course catalog:

“The question at the center of this course is, “How do humans behave in catastrophic times?” Does their behavior change in the midst of trying to survive and the decisions they face? We will examine major catastrophic events from the past, look to potential future events, and consider a concept for increasing our chances of survival.”

So if there is a zombie apocalypse, is our only chance of salvation resting in the hands of MSU alum. Thankfully, no. The course will be available through the university’s Lifelong Education program which is open to everyone who meets the requirements (mainly a high school diploma).

The course will be taught by Glenn Stutzky, who summed up the program to TIME.com by saying: “In a time of catastrophe, some people find their humanity; other lose theirs.”

Man saws off own foot to avoid work

An unemployed Austrian man on Monday deliberately sliced off his left foot with a mechanical saw and threw it into an oven ahead of a health check on whether he was fit to work, police said.

When police arrived the "desperate" 56-year-old from Mitterlabill in southern Austria was still conscious but had lost a lot of blood, local police chief Franz Fasching told AFP.

He was airlifted to hospital in Graz where his condition was said to be stable.

The man had mounted the mitre saw on two stools in his boiler room using nails and removed the guard plate before slicing off the foot above the ankle and around 5:00 am (0300 GMT).

Emergency services "looked in the oven and were able to recover the foot ... The foot was taken the hospital but it was so badly burned that it cannot be sewn back on," Fasching said.

Idiot Jedi

An Oregon judge has used his force to order a 45-day jail sentence and mental health evaluation for a would-be Jedi who attacked toy store customers with a pair of lightsabers.

David Allen Canterbury, 33, told Judge Kenneth Walker that he is already seeking mental health treatment. Canterbury also apologized to his victims.

The Oregonian reported that Canterbury pleaded no contest Monday to assault and resisting arrest.

Canterbury had a "Star Wars" lightsaber in each hand as he swung at three customers last Dec. 14 at a Toys R Us store, Portland police said. He carried the lightsabers outside the store and swung at police.

According to The Oregonian, police attempted to shoot Canterbury with a Taser but the suspected deflected one of the wires away.

Officers eventually wrestled him to the ground.

No one was injured, the newspaper reported.

Canterbury has been banned from the toy store.

Pizza Beer Anyone?

A drink and a takeaway is a staple of a weekend evening in, but one enterprising couple have combined the two in one bottle by selling pizza flavoured beer.

The bizarre beverage is brewed by husband and wife team Tom and Athena Seefurth, who gave up their normal jobs five years ago to start making the beer full time.

From humble beginnings in the garage of their home in St Charles, Illinois, USA, the couple have now sold over 500 barrels of the savoury lager and the beer is on its way to the UK.

The drink is brewed normally for a lager, but at various stages tomatoes, basil, oregano and garlic are added to give the beer its unique flavour.

Mr Seefurth, 48, said: 'The idea was originally just to make a marinade to go in any batter or pizza base.

'We were eating some pizzas one day with some wine and the wine just didn't taste right with the pizza.

'So I went and got some of the stuff we'd made, at this point it wasn't chilled or carbonated, but when we tried it we thought 'holy smokes this stuff is good'.

'We were so surprised we ended up sharing two or three bottles, it just went so well with the pizzas.'
After discovering they had a success on their hands Mr Seefurth, a real estate broker, and his wife, a mortgage expert, set about making more.

He said: 'We took it to a pub to market it and people loved it.

Sixaxis Controller App Touch Profiles

It seems there is a little confusion with regards to this app so here I will explain a little better and provide my personal key maps, but more on that later.

Firstly, this app is for ANDROID PHONES ONLY.

It won't work on anything else. The app can be found here. There is also a checker that you can download and see if your phone is suitable. That can be found here.

You could also visit the Dancing Pixel Studios site here.

Now that that is cleared up, you need to have some pre-requisites before this app will work.

1. A Sixaxis PS3 controller. It isn't recommended to use any other pad as they can produce technical issues. A USB controller WILL NOT WORK so don't ask.

2. Your phone needs ROOT. If you don't know what this is I suggest you do some reading at XDA Developers of Cyanogenmod.

3. A PS3 sixaxis charging cable - Due to the way pairing is done with the controllers, you need to manually pair your controller with the PC utility 'SixaxisPairTool' (available on the website) and a mini-USB cable. Android 3.1+ users can also pair directly on their devices via USB.

I personally use an LG Optimus 2X with Cyanogenmod 7 and this app works flawlessly.

There are numerous guides on youtube how to create the key maps so I wont bore you with details.

Anyway, onto key mappings.

You can download my touch profiles here.

These are for:

Brothers in Arms 2 (Gameloft Freemium version)
9mm (not working 100% corectly)
Frontline Commando
GTA 3
Modern Combat 3
Nova 2

Simply extract the archive to your SDcard into \data\com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller\profiles

These are designed for the LG Optimus 2X so anyone who uses tablets of phones with larger screens are going to have to tweak these to get them to work properly.

If you have any other questions, please ask!

Modern Combat 3 for Android

My first game review on my blog!!

Having been playing a lot of "Freemium" games by Gameloft and Glu I found myself following them on Twitter.

Much to my luck I read Gameloft announcing they would be dropping the price of Modern Combat to 69p for one day only so I got it.

Firstly, the one player campaign is good solid fun. Gameloft have pulled out all the stops to make this a Modern Warfare clone and it works VERY well.

The second level doesn't fail to impress as you play a chopper gunner and even have a choice of thermal viewing and 3 different guns to play with.

The story is nothing ground breaking but for that of a mobile game is solid with great voice acting and unlike anything seen on mobiles.

Sometimes the game can be a little odd, like when sneaking through a village and your ally will shout out random warnings even when you haven't been detected, but I guess this is nothing that a patch can't fix.

That being said, the minor flaws I have experienced can be over looked because the rest of the game oozes quality.

The touch screen controls take a little getting used to (as with most mobile games) but if you own an Android device you are in luck!!

In my previous blog I wrote about the Sixaxis Controller App which, as long as you have root on your mobile and some time to map your controller it works beautifully with this game.

Here is a youtube video of it in action:

On top of the single player campaign, multiplayer is another area where this game shines.

This has to be without a doubt the best multiplayer I have played on a mobile device.

I think it has six maps, seven game modes, up to 12 players online, 100 ranks to level up, and like  Modern Warfare, each rank brinks perks, weapons and attachments.

This can be great fun to play with the only downside being that there are no playlists so you tend to get stuck on the same map a lot (Gameloft please take notice here as this would make the online mode amazing).

So to sum it all up:

Graphics: 9 - All round lovely graphics and effect.
Sound: 7 - A little buggy at times but genrally very good.
Lastability: 10 - Four difficulty modes and an epic multiplayer will make this one to last.

Overall: 8.5 - Slightly buggy sound and the lack of online playlists are the only things that drag this game down. Gameloft could easily patch these issues and if they do I will adjust my score accordingly.

Don't miss out on this game if you like mobile gaming.

Available on iOS and Android.

Sixaxis App for Android

Having decided to add more stuff to my blog (I tend to find I don't have time and then have a window where I blog a few things) I've decided to start adding more gaming content.

Something I love, but don't tend to write about as I prefer to spend my time playing and not writing.

Anyway, since being reunited with GTA 3 on Android, I found as much as I found the controls intuitive, you can't beat playing with a pad!

So I bought the Sixaxis Controller App for Android by Dancing Pixel Studios.

This is now how I play my Android games!

Phone is stuck to my PS3 Keyboard.

What a joy! It allows you to map the physical buttons of the pad, to touch screen areas on your screen, so basically ANY game can be controlled with your Playstation 3 Sixaxis Pad.

Without having to explain too much I made a video on youtube showing how this works, but for a tiny £1.07 it's worth every penny!!

Enjoy!
